College students and an ESA housing request

A college residence and an off-campus lease can have different accommodation contacts. Start free screening after identifying the housing process, the requested documentation and the timeline for your actual residence.

Responsible planning

Find the process for the building you will actually live in

Two students at the same college may use different accommodation routes if one lives in university housing and the other has a private lease. Begin with the residence and its reviewer before commissioning a document.

Residence hall or university apartment

Locate the school’s disability or housing accommodation instructions. Save the current forms and submission process for that institution.

Privately managed off-campus home

Identify the property’s accommodation contact. School enrollment does not make the university the decision-maker for a separate private lease.

Prepare an off-campus housing request

Send the evaluator the school’s actual form

Keep an institution-specific form in its original version. Ask the service team whether it can be considered, which fields are for the clinician, and what additional information the reviewer may need.

  1. Obtain current instructions
  2. Identify professional-only fields
  3. Ask about review and timing

Do not complete a clinician’s certification yourself or edit a signed letter to match a campus request. Route the question through your case so the issuer can respond appropriately.

Explain what the animal contributes in the residence

Your assessment should describe the difficulty in your own living environment and the animal’s observed contribution. A roommate’s preference or a general wish to bring a pet to college is not the same account.

Separate the dates that depend on different people

Housing review date
Ask the institution when and how it reviews accommodation requests. Record any deadline or clarification it gives you.
Clinical review time
Allow for an individual assessment and follow-up questions. A service’s listed processing time is not a promise of institutional approval.
Move-in or room change
Tell the housing office if its decision is pending close to your arrival. Ask that office about any workable interim arrangement.

Colorado Service Animals does not offer an ESA registry. A professional evaluation determines whether documentation is appropriate; optional cards and certificates do not establish access rights.

Long teaching days and exam periods

Arrange feeding, exercise or toileting, and cleaning around the schedule you actually keep. Confirm who can assist when coursework or illness disrupts the plan.

Shared rooms and temporary absences

Discuss practical arrangements through the appropriate housing process. Do not assume a roommate has agreed to become the animal’s caregiver.

Breaks, travel, and housing closure

Know where the animal will stay when the residence closes and how it will get there. Check the transport provider’s requirements separately from the campus housing file.

These official resources illustrate where to find current instructions. Use your own school’s process even if another institution’s form looks similar; CSA does not approve university accommodations.

Fit the clinical review into the campus application

The clinician and the housing office have different responsibilities. A letter can support the file without deciding room availability, an institutional deadline or the accommodation outcome.

Check the Colorado clinician's credential
  1. First, complete free screening

Identify the animal-support request and tell the service team about the school's actual documentation instructions.

  2. Next, participate in an individual review

A Colorado-licensed clinician decides whether documentation is appropriate and whether clarification is needed.

  3. Then, use the letter if approved

Approved documentation is delivered by email. Submit it through the school's designated process and monitor that office's response.

A service processing estimate describes the clinical workflow. The university's separate review can take additional time.

Check the campus need before selecting the service

A room assignment, clinical letter and decorative document are not interchangeable parts of the housing application.

One animal in the residence
Use the single-animal ESA review for a request concerning one animal's disability-related home support.
Several requested animals
The multiple-animal service concerns each animal's support; ask the school how it reviews the proposed arrangement.
A psychiatric service dog
The letter review addresses clinical documentation, while established task training and campus access remain separate questions.
Certificate or ID additions
Optional bundle items cannot replace the school's documentation instructions or authorize an animal in a classroom.

When forms, classes, and care plans overlap

  1. Can my ESA automatically come to lectures after residence approval?

No. An accommodation for a residence is not blanket access to campus classrooms. Ask the appropriate campus office about other settings and distinguish ESA housing support from service-dog access.

  2. Should I apply again for every housing-office form?

First send the additional request through your existing case. Explain which institution issued it and the deadline so the team can identify the appropriate next step without duplicating the clinical history.

  3. What about care during exams or semester breaks?

Plan who is responsible when your schedule changes or the residence closes. Feeding, exercise, transport, and temporary housing should be workable throughout the academic year.

  4. Which student-housing details should I assemble before contacting a clinician?

Keep housing deadlines, roommate arrangements, and the animal’s care schedule in one planning note. Separate a request for the residence from questions about classrooms, dining areas, and other campus spaces.

  5. Does a university accommodation approval guarantee a room is available?

Do not treat an accommodation decision as a housing allocation. CU Boulder states that an approved accommodation does not guarantee campus housing; ask your institution’s housing office about availability and placement.

  6. Can a parent complete the entire CU Boulder accommodation process for me?

CU Boulder says students must remain involved even when a release permits communication with a parent. Check the university’s current instructions for consent and participation rather than assuming a family member can establish the accommodation alone.

Prepare the campus process before the move-in deadline

Confirm whether the request concerns university housing or a private lease, then gather the appropriate instructions. Explain the animal's support in the residence and plan for breaks, roommates, and ongoing care.
