Colorado ESA and PSD FAQs
Understand ESA letters, psychiatric service dogs and the Colorado evaluation process. Find the answer you need, from your first screening to receiving an approved document.
The questions behind most ESA and PSD requests
Explore the difference between screening and approval, animal roles, housing fees and letter delivery. Expand a question to read its answer.
- Getting a letter
How do I request an ESA letter in Colorado?
Start by describing your needs in the online screening. If you continue with an evaluation, a Colorado-licensed clinician considers your symptoms, their effect on everyday functioning and the support your animal provides. A letter is issued only when that assessment supports it.
Does a free ESA screening approve my animal?
The screening collects the information needed to begin reviewing your request. It is not a signed clinical finding, a housing decision or an ESA registration. Review any paid service before proceeding, and answer the assessment questions using your actual experience.
- Housing and animal roles
Can my Colorado landlord charge pet rent for an ESA?
Pet charges should be addressed as part of your assistance-animal accommodation request, not assumed to disappear when you buy a letter. Colorado law includes ESAs in its assistance-animal protections and gives the housing provider an opportunity to consider the accommodation. Identify the rent or deposit you want adjusted, ask for a written response and seek advice about an unresolved charge.
What separates an emotional support animal from a psychiatric service dog?
An ESA provides disability-related support through its presence or companionship. A psychiatric service dog has learned a specific action that assists with a psychiatric disability. Comfort alone does not meet the ADA service-dog definition, and an ESA housing letter does not grant entry to every public place.
- After applying
How will I receive a letter after clinical approval?
Approved letters are delivered by email, with finalized documents available through the connected customer account. Use the email address on your application and check the case status if the file is not yet available. A processing estimate does not replace the clinician’s need to finish the assessment.
What should I do if my landlord questions the document?
Ask the housing provider to explain the concern in writing. Keep the issued letter unchanged and send any verification question to the issuing service through your case. A clerical correction, a clinician-verification request and a disagreement about accommodation rights may require different responses.

Can I use my American Service Animals account here?
CSA connects to the central ASA customer services. Use your established account rather than creating a second profile to repeat the same case.
If access fails, identify the login problem for support rather than submitting a duplicate application to bypass it.

Colorado Service Animals does not offer an ESA registry. A professional evaluation determines whether documentation is appropriate; optional cards and certificates do not establish access rights.
Start a new Colorado documentation request
The free screening opens the assessment process. It does not make the clinical decision or reserve an accommodation with a housing provider.
What do I complete first?
Submit the screening with accurate symptoms, functional effects and animal-support details.
Who considers my information?
A clinician licensed for Colorado reviews the request and may ask for clarification before deciding.
Where does an approved letter arrive?
An approved document is delivered by email; your account is the place to follow the associated case record.
Already started? Return to the existing case instead of submitting duplicate information.

The assigned professional may need clarification or direct contact. Check messages and appointment information; a completed payment does not mean the review is finished.
Where can I find my letter or receipt?
Approved documentation
When an approved case reaches its document-ready stage, use the account’s Letters section. Contact support about a missing file or clerical error rather than editing an issued document.
A transaction question
Use the payment history to identify the transaction and submit a request under the applicable terms. Do not send full card credentials through a support message.
Does an ID card change an animal’s access rights?
ESA housing support and trained psychiatric service-dog work are different. A certificate purchase does not convert companionship into a task or grant universal access.
