How to Choose an ESA in Colorado

Choose an emotional support animal with attention to your daily routine, the animal’s needs and the people sharing your home. Request a Colorado ESA assessment based on the support relationship you can describe honestly and maintain responsibly.

Sustainable care routines
Honest relationship observations
Individual animal needs

A relationship has two sides

  • The support you experience.
  • The care the animal requires.

Include both in the decision to share a home.

Define the relationship you can realistically support

Discuss the support being sought before choosing an animal from a list of popular breeds. The relevant question is an individual disability-related need, not a universal best animal.

Use an existing relationship as an observation record

Describe what happens

If you already live with an animal, describe what you have actually observed. Familiarity can provide useful context, but it does not make clinical approval automatic.

Include the hard parts

Explain care demands and interactions that do not help as well as those that do. The reviewer needs the relationship as it is, rather than a description written to match a hoped-for result.

Build the care plan around an ordinary week

Consider exercise, feeding, grooming, veterinary needs, space, and the time available. A care burden that cannot be met is not solved by a documentation purchase.

  1. Each day
    • Who supplies meals and fresh water?
    • Who handles exercise, enrichment and cleanup?
  2. Over the month
    • Which costs belong in the household budget?
    • Which appointments or supplies require planning?
  3. When plans change
    • Who can take over during an absence?
    • How will that person receive care instructions?

Include the preferences of the people sharing the space

Noise, touch, movement, and allergies may affect the arrangement. Include the applicant’s preferences and the practical needs of other household members.

When behavior or suitability is uncertain

Temperament and behavior vary within a species or breed. Seek appropriate veterinary or training advice when suitability or safety is uncertain.

When service work is part of the goal

An animal may provide meaningful companionship without being suited to trained public assistance. A PSD plan requires a separate discussion of task training and behavior.

Consider the commitment before bringing an animal home

Do not assume that buying or adopting a particular animal guarantees a letter or housing approval. Discuss the request and care plan before making a commitment you cannot reverse easily.

Identify who can care for the animal during travel, illness, or a period of reduced functioning. Backup care is a practical responsibility, not an admission that support is unnecessary.

Include the actual home in the decision

Colorado Service Animals does not offer an ESA registry. A professional evaluation determines whether documentation is appropriate; optional cards and certificates do not establish access rights.

Assess the relationship, not a breed ranking

Request a Colorado ESA evaluation using your own observations

Discuss both the support the animal provides and the care you can sustain. Documentation depends on an individual assessment, not appearance, species popularity or an adoption description.

Your first record: screening
Describe the symptoms, daily limitations and any existing animal relationship accurately.
Your clinical conversation: Colorado review
A professional licensed for Colorado considers whether the reported support and clinical need justify a letter.
Your documentation: email if approved
An approved letter is sent by email. It does not choose an animal or guarantee that an adoption will suit the household.

Revisit a plan when circumstances change

Needs and animal health can change. Revisit the care plan and seek professional input when the support relationship or living circumstances materially changes.

A move
Reassess the space, travel routes and household routine at the new address.
A change in care
Review responsibilities with the people who will provide daily support.
A new concern
Seek suitable advice about health or behavior rather than expecting a revised letter to resolve it.

Selection questions that a breed list cannot answer

The animal and existing relationship

  1. Will choosing a popular ESA breed guarantee approval?

No particular breed determines the clinical result or the housing decision. The individual's need, the actual support relationship and the relevant accommodation all require their own consideration.

  2. Can I discuss an animal already living with me?

Yes. Explain the support you observe and the practical care arrangement, including difficulties. Existing familiarity is useful context without being an automatic qualification.

  3. Who can help when I am unsure about temperament?

A suitable animal-behavior professional or veterinarian can address the particular concern. A documentation assessment should not be treated as a temperament test.

Care, advice and complete information

  1. Why should backup care be planned before an adoption?

Travel, illness and other interruptions can change who is available. Identifying a dependable caregiver helps protect the animal's welfare when the usual routine is unavailable.

  2. Can an adoption counselor tell me whether I qualify for an ESA letter?

An adoption conversation can address the animal’s needs and household fit. Clinical eligibility for documentation is a separate question for a qualified professional reviewing your circumstances.

  3. Should I hide difficult behavior because it might weaken my application?

Describe the relationship honestly, including care problems and stressful interactions. An incomplete account makes it harder to assess the support involved and plan responsibly for the animal.

Keep clinical review, housing and animal care connected

A disagreement with a housing provider needs a separate review of the facts. CCRD's housing notice identifies a one-year complaint deadline from the alleged act; obtain advice promptly if that issue arises.
