PSD Letters for Colorado Veterans

Colorado veterans can request a private PSD evaluation based on present disability-related needs and the dog’s established work. Keep clinical documentation separate from applications for training, dog placement or veterans’ benefits.

The veteran's starting file

A present-day need, not a service-history shortcut

A veteran’s PSD request should connect the person’s present disability-related needs with the dog’s trained work. Service history alone does not establish that every dog is suitable or that a particular program will fund it.

Begin with the question you need answered: clinical documentation, a training assessment, or eligibility for a separate support program. Naming that question helps you approach the right professional.

Three destinations for three different requests

Clinical documentation
A clinician considers your individual functional circumstances and the documentation being requested.
Dog training
A trainer can discuss learned behavior, unfinished work, handling and the dog's suitability.
VA or nonprofit programs
The organization administering a program explains its selection rules, funding and available services.

Describe the work the dog already performs

  1. Identify the situation.

Choose a setting that matters to your current functioning, rather than beginning with the animal's vest or title.

  2. State the learned action.

Discuss the actual task and the handling arrangement rather than assuming a veteran-specific label changes the standard. A dog intended to intimidate others is not an appropriate substitute for trained assistance.

  3. Include the limits.

Note when another person takes over or when the response has not been reliable enough to use.

Assemble a useful appointment packet

Keep these observations together

  • The training organization or self-training record, if applicable
  • The established task and the present functional need it addresses
  • Which questions concern clinical documentation and which concern a separate benefits program

Identify any existing training organization or records and explain the actual learned tasks. Separate those observations from military records, benefit decisions, or a general statement that the dog is supportive.

Arrange care around the handler's actual schedule

Think through who feeds, exercises and supervises the animal during appointments or periods when you cannot handle it. List an alternative to the dog when assistance is unavailable.

Which records belong with which reviewer?

Keep clinical, training, and benefits documents organized by purpose. This CSA assessment does not determine VA program eligibility or replace the requirements of a separate assistance-dog organization.

ESA and PSD Pricing for Colorado Veterans

The prices below belong to a private assessment service. Confirm any hoped-for reimbursement directly with the relevant benefit program before paying, and do not assume the plan supplies a dog or its training. Those arrangements have separate selection and eligibility processes.

Colorado Service Animals does not offer an ESA registry. A professional evaluation determines whether documentation is appropriate; optional cards and certificates do not establish access rights.

A private documentation service

Request a veteran's PSD assessment for the present clinical need

Begin with the documentation question rather than a funding expectation. This review does not enroll an applicant in a government program or arrange a trained dog.

  1. Open the request through screening

Provide your current circumstances and explain the established work that relates to the functional limitation.

  2. Complete the Colorado clinical review

A licensed clinician evaluates the information needed for a documentation decision. Military status does not replace that individual assessment.

  3. Receive the letter if approved

Supported documentation is delivered by email. Direct any separate benefits application to its responsible program.

A question about a benefit application belongs with the people administering or assisting with that process. Keep it separate from purchasing private clinical documentation.

Veteran documentation: separate the decisions

The answer may come from a clinician, a trainer or a benefits administrator.

Program enrollment

Does a private PSD letter enroll me in a VA dog program?

No. Enrollment or assistance through a VA program depends on that program's own process. Ask the responsible VA team which application and evidence it needs.

Training evidence

Does being a veteran prove that my dog has a trained task?

Military history does not describe a dog's learned behavior. Explain the action it performs and the disability-related need that action addresses.

Payment questions

Where should I ask about payment reimbursement?

Contact the specific insurer, benefit administrator or program before purchasing the private service. CSA cannot determine another organization's payment decision.

Training history

Can I explain self-training instead of listing a training organization?

Describe the training you actually completed and the work the dog performs. Identify questions about reliability for a qualified trainer; a program name alone would not answer them.

Purchase decisions

Should I buy a letter before a program confirms its documentation requirements?

Ask the particular program what it accepts and which professional must supply it. Confirm the purpose before paying for a private assessment whose scope may differ from the program's needs.

Present clinical need

Can I discuss a need unrelated to my military service?

Give the clinician an accurate account of the current functional issue and relevant history. Do not describe every difficulty as service-connected merely because the request comes from a veteran.

Follow the veteran-specific route that fits

Match the veteran's request to the right professional or program

Bring the current functional concern and the dog's established work to the clinical discussion. Direct funding, placement, or benefit questions to the organization that administers that program.
